Slightly acidic water is fine to drink and wash with, but it can degenerate your water heater over time. The sacrificial anode rod protects your water heater tank from corrosion by attracting corrosive elements in water, so they attack the anode rod rather than your water heater tank interior.
With regular inspection and replacement of the anode rod, tank life can be greatly extended. Simply remove the anode rod from the tank and inspect it. If it's mostly eaten away, replace it with a new one to extend the life of the tank. Frequency of anode replacement will vary depending on the water conditions and usage, but should typically be done once a year.
